Day 10 | Sunday 27th July 2013

Strange day.
Got up had lovely breakfast – sausages for the first time with my fried eggs.
Went and saw the church in the grounds of the hotel with Keith.

Left at 11-20am to head south for Chimborazo . Everyone feeling tired and sore muscles.

Plan. Stop for lunch after 2 hours in Ambato. Nice restaurant – bob and Wynne had a huge pizza between them. I had spaghetti with chicken in creamy sauce. Prior to entering restaurant only about 4-5 of us felt fit enough to climb our next mountain, Chimborazo .

At the restaurant Ossy raises the issue that Chimborazo is currently not safe to climb. One of his guides just contacted him to say they couldn’t climb today – due to rockfall in mid section . This has come from the recent eruption of a neighbouring volcano. Option is to head north and climb cayambe. 3rd highest peak in Ecuador which is on the equator.
Up to 9 of us would attempt this climb with the other 3 going off to do other things north of Quito eg the cloud forest.

Hacienda nr Chimborazo wouldn’t cancel our booking at late notice. We therefore head a further 90 mins south.
We get to our hacienda at Chimborazo only to find that they’ve given our rooms away to others.

We leave immediately, change plans and head 3.5 hours north back to Quito.

We arrive back in Quito about 7-30pm and stay at Eugenia hotel, a 3 star hotel but with some wifi.

We all go out for a meal at ‘crepes and waffles’. I have salad, Nigel has a huge meal – loaf of bread with beef inside. Eats 1/2 of it and then can’t sleep all night.

Bed 11pm. Slept well till 6-30am. Bob did t sleep a wink because of noise from people in the street.
