Left Chilcabamba for iliniza Norte at 9-30am
Matt and Martin were warming up for this, by having a plank competition. Martin was the champ.
2.5 hours on bus to the entrance of the iliniza national park.
Walked for 3 hours to Refugio Nuevo Horizontes, our overnight camp.
I started to get a blister on my left heel. Put on a blister plaster and an extra inner sock liner.
Our bags were carried up to the refuge by a horse.
The walk was not unlike trekking in the Brecon Beacons.
The hut was very small and very basic.
There was a Japanese group there already – in total about 30 plus people in the hut . Amber and some of the guides had gone ahead to reserve our bunks.
We slept 3 to a bunk (or tried to sleep)
The first person I met in the hut was a 5th year medical student from Swansea University. He was away for 6 weeks on an elective period.
There was no electric in the hut and it was damp as there was no ventilation. Water would drip from the ceiling onto the matresses.
Our food had been brought from rumiloma – chicken noodle soup and fried rice with beef and green beans.
Bed by 7pm!! Couldn’t sleep – therefore read a book.
Chesh snored all night about 6 hours – kept everyone awake.
John Edwards – slept on the floor!
