Conwy FC’s Prostate Cancer Day

Event: Conwy FC’s Prostate Cancer Day

Date Held: September 21st, 2018

Organiser: Conwy Borough FC

Venue: Y Morfa

A special prostate cancer awareness evening is being held at Conwy Borough FC on Friday 21st September in support of Prostate Cymru, the leading prostate health charity in Wales. Conwy Borough FC are a semi-professional football club based in Conwy, playing in the Huws Gray Alliance League. The club started the current season on a high having been crowned the champions of the league for the 2017/18 season.

With members of the club having been affected by prostate cancer recently, the most common cancer diagnosed in Welsh men, Conwy Borough FC have decided to team up with Prostate Cymru to raise awareness and funds on the evening of their popular home derby game against Rhyl which kicks off at 7:30pm.

The club known as “the tangerines” are turning blue for the evening with the team training in Prostate Cymru t-shirts and the match day programme changing colour to support the cause. The club is encouraging fans to join in by wearing blue to the match against Rhyl. Some charity t-shirts will also be available to purchase on the day of the event to help fans show their support. In addition to raising crucial awareness of prostate cancer, which affects 1 in 8 Welsh men, a raffle and collection will take place and a percentage of the match ticket sales will be donated to Prostate Cymru.

The day is part of the More Than A Club initiative, a programme dedicated to helping clubs use the power of football to develop links within their local communities. Conwy Borough FC is one of four clubs from Wales and Ireland taking part in the More Than A Club project, led by the Football Association of Ireland and Vi-Ability, to develop and deliver innovative social programmes centred around health, education and social inclusion.

Mandy Powell, head of enterprise and life science said; “We look forward to hosting this event in partnership with Prostate Cymru and Conwy Borough FC. We’d also like to recognise the willingness and ambitions of Conwy Borough to be ‘More Than a Club’ and placed at the heart of its community. We welcome the people of Conwy to become an “Orange Neighbour” and hope to break down the walls of the club to everyone in Conwy. We hope the programmes we are delivering at the club continue to thrive and grow and continue to promote positive attitudes and behaviours when it comes to mental and physical health.”

Chris Whilton, Chair of Conwy Borough FC said; “Everyone at Conwy Borough FC is delighted to be able to host Prostate Cymru at Y Morfa and to help them in raising awareness about prostate cancer. We regard ourselves as more than a football club and it is important that we lend support to such fantastic organisations that work hard to benefit the wider community.”

Volunteers from Prostate Cymru will be holding an awareness stand at the Y Morfa Stadium on 21st September. At the awareness stand the charity’s volunteers will be chatting about what the charity does, the key facts about benign prostate disease and prostate cancer and the risk statistics for men in Wales.

We are hoping for record numbers at the fixture, so please show your support by wearing blue and coming along to the match from 7pm on Friday 21st September 2018.
