Jemima goes to Mametz

Simon Moffett, a committee member of the Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru, will be driving his classic car ‘Jemima’ to Mametz in July 2016. Jemima is a Morris 8 and will be 80 years old at the time of the journey. Simon will be driving Jemima as part of the Mametz Run classic car rally. About 20 classic cars and an electric powered car will be making the journey of 710 miles, but from Pembrokeshire Jemima will have to do about 840.

The classic car run from Swansea to Mametz is being made to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Mametz Wood. The battle was fought by the 38th Welsh Division as part of the Somme offensive in July 1916. About 4000 men died or were injured in the battle. As part of the trip, those participating in the rally hope to attend a remembrance ceremony at the Dragon memorial in Mametz to pay tribute to those men and the families they left behind.

Simon is hoping to raise approximately £10 for every mile to support Prostate Cymru. Donations can be made on Simon’s JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/jemimagoestomametz You can also follow Simon’s progress on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JemimagoestoMametz .

Simon officially launched his fundraising challenge on St David’s Day 2016 in St David’s, Pembrokeshire. At the launch, the Bishop of St David’s blessed a bunch of daffodils. Simon presented these daffodils to Colonel Mark Stoter at Brawdy Barracks and received a plaque from the local regiment to take to the memorial in Mametz.

Simon has held a number of fundraising events in the lead up to the journey to Mametz such as visits to local fetes and family days, a stall at the Really Wild Festival and bucket collections including one at Parc y Scarlets. Simon and Jemima depart for Mametz on 5th July.
