Tenby Boxing Day Swim

Event: Tenby Boxing Day Swim

Date Held: December 26th, 2019

Organiser: Tenby Sea Swimming Association

Venue: North Beach, Tenby

Prostate Cymru has been chosen as one of the nominated charities for the 49th Tenby Boxing Day Swim. The winter dip was established in 1970 and is organised by the Tenby Sea Swimming Association. Although the event itself is almost fifty years old, the origins of its parent organisation, the Tenby Sea Swimming Association, date back more than a century. In 1910, Yorkshire man Arthur Dickinson moved to Tenby with his family. A keen year-round swimmer, Arthur taught local children how to swim safely. Arthur’s descendants continued the family tradition and formed the association in the 1960s.

Ranked in the UK’s top ten barmiest winter dips, the popular event has raised almost £300,000 for charities and good causes. This year’s Tenby Boxing Day Swim takes place on the town’s North Beach on Thursday 26th December from 11:00am following a raft race. The stampede for the sea is signalled at 11:30am and following the dip, swimmers can look forward to the warmth of the beach bonfire, hot soup and a commemorative medal.

Participants are encouraged to be creative and wear fancy dress for the event. This year’s theme prompts swimmers to raise awareness of a global issue that affects their local waters: climate change.

When choosing the theme, swim Chairman Chris Osborne said: “Our seaside environment, which we proudly treasure, is under threat so it seems absolutely right that we support efforts to raise awareness of climate change and its impact.”
